BRIDGES: 1ª General Assembly

The first general assembly of Bringing together Research and Industry for the Development of Glider Enviromental Services – BRIDGES, took place in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto – FEUP - on days 6, 7 and 8 of September of 2016. This meeting aimed to evaluate the project status and share results and solutions between the different partners involved in the project.

From transport, energy and fishing to high growth marine sectors of seabed mining, aquaculture and offshore energy, emerging information ecosystems will transform utilisation and sustainability of ocean resources.

In EXPOSURES, we demonstrate how on-demand autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can drive intelligent data analytics to rapidly assess environmental processes and impacts in marine waterways. The result will be create new marine information ecosystem that exploits underwater IoT infrastructures such as those offered by the European SUNRISE facility.

The partners of Project NETMAR are getting ready for the last demonstration of the project.

On May 28th and 29th, partners will meet at Porto de Leixões, Portugal for another exercise regarding maritime safety, incident response and oil spill control.
In this simulation a ship is reported to have sunk North of Porto and oil spill has been detected, near shore, a few kilometers south.

During the last week a team from LSTS went to Galicia and Corunna to take part in the second demo of the project NETMAR, that happened at 1st October at A Pobra do Caramiñal.

The scenario created for this exercise, involved a ship that suffered damage to the hull during a storm and was leaking fuel causing a spill. An UAV would then be deployed to assess the contaminated area. Drifters would also be deployed to accurately understand the way the fuel was spreading and an UAV would make a survey to acquire a more precise image of the contaminated area. During this operation containment measure would be put in place and a ROV would make a hull inspection to evaluate the damage.

After the demonstration a smaller part of the team headed further north for the seminar "New scenarios of maritime safety in the European Union. Reflections after the Erika and Prestige disasters” at Oleiros.

It is where we all came from and it is vital to our future, but the earth’s oceans, seas and waterways remain a mystery to us – a final frontier. The Sunrise project is at the forefront of a revolution in communications, creating an underwater ‘internet of things’, that will mobilise robots to work in groups, interacting together and passing back information to us on life underwater.
