During the first week of June (5-9) the LSTS participated in a large scope joint exercise off the coast of Cartagena with members from Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering (UNIZG-FER), Oceanographic Center University of Cyprus, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) and Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). The exercise took place onboard the Clara Campoamor vessel provided by the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency (SASEMAR).

During the week long exercises the LSTS spearheaded series of multi-system deployments culminating in a simultaneous AUV, ASV and UAV deployment at the end of the work week.

The purpose of this exercise was to test and benchmark operational challenges when deploying fleets of systems, from different manufactures, with the objective of detecting and monitoring oil spills. In this regard, the LSTS software toolchain served as a pivotal point of control and cooperation between all active systems. The Neptus C4I platform was used to plan, control and supervise the whole series of operations and also analyse all the collected data from the deployed systems.

The next iteration of this exercise will take place in Cork, during 2018, and will count with added participation from University of the Balearic Islands, University of Girona and the Irish Coast Guard.

The partners of Project NETMAR are getting ready for the last demonstration of the project.

On May 28^th and 29^th, partners will meet at Porto de Leixões, Portugal for another exercise regarding maritime safety, incident response and oil spill control.
In this simulation a ship is reported to have sunk North of Porto and oil spill has been detected, near shore, a few kilometers south.

To assess the situation and provide communication with external entities, a command center is established at Porto Harbor. Two teams are then dispatched. One team heads north to survey the sunken ship whereas the second team will be responsible for aerial imagery assessment.

The survey of the sunken ship will be assured by LAUVs developed at LSTS with a help from a ROV from University of Limerick which will be put to test to provide a clear image of the ship condition. Drifters will also be deployed contributing with real time positions of the currents a thus helping in the prediction the oil spill heading.

The second team will launch unmanned aerial vehicles developed by Tecnalia and LSTS to evaluate the evolution of the oil spill allowing a more effective deployment of containment barriers.

With this simulation we aim to demonstrate how technology can improve the response to this kind of incident that has such a big impact in the environment and local economy.

Events

LSTS, together with Oceanscan MST and the Portuguese Navy gave a demonstration of AUV technologies to several Spanish institutions, at Cadiz, Spain.The focus of this demonstration was to showcase the LAUV-Seacon class vehicles by performing a series of surveys using Sidescan Sonar, Multibeam Sonar, CTD and Optical sensors.
During the demonstration, elements of the Spanish Navy were able to teleoperate the AUVs and follow all phases of the AUV life-cycle: planning, execution, revision of acquired data and dissemination of this data to the web.
